Nick Reiner will be charged with two counts of first degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Reiners were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department announced on Monday afternoon that Nick Reiner was booked for murder and is being held without bail.

The murder charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison or the death penalty with no possibility of parole. A decision has not yet been made on whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty, Hochman said. The case is considered a “special circumstances” murder case because of the multiple killings involved, Hochman said.

Paramedics responded to a call for medical aid at the residence in the Brentwood neighborhood around 3:30 p.m. PT. Inside, they found Reiner, 78, and Singer Reiner, 70, dead.

Authorities declined to discuss the evidence that led them to charge Nick Reiner with murdering his parents or officially confirm reports that the Reiners were stabbed to death.

Nick Reiner was due to be arraigned on Tuesday morning, but his lawyer, Alan Jackson, told reporters that he had not been “medically cleared” for transport to the courthouse. Hochman told reporters Tuesday that Reiner will be formally charged in court once he is cleared to do so.

Rob Reiner was the director of several classic Hollywood movies, including This Is Spinal TapA Few Good MenWhen Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Stand by Me and Misery.

As an actor, Reiner was best known for playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the iconic sitcom All in the Family, alongside Archie Bunker.

Singer Reiner was a photographer and producer. The couple met on the set of When Harry Met Sally and married in 1989. They shared three children together: Jake, Nick and Romy. Rob Reiner also had an adopted daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.

Our live coverage has concluded for the day.

Rob Reiner also left a mark on the world of politics

In addition to his extraordinary success as an actor and director, Rob Reiner spent decades working to create change on a wide range of political issues. Unlike many celebrities, his advocacy went beyond sound bites and public endorsements. Reiner and his wife, Michele, worked within the machinery of politics to effect lasting change on the issues they cared most about.

Reiner played a key role in supporting a lawsuit that led to California’s ban on same-sex marriage being thrown out by the courts in 2010, a ruling that laid some of the legal groundwork behind the Supreme Court’s decision enshrining marriage equality nationwide five years later.

In the 1990s, he led a successful campaign to pass a ballot initiative that greatly expanded early childhood education in California, funded by a new tax on cigarettes. Reiner was also a devoted environmentalist who helped prevent a 3,000-acre nature preserve and wildlife refuge north of Los Angeles from being paved over by developers.

“Beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people — and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action,” former President Barack Obama wrote on social media in response to news of the Reiners’ deaths.

Authorities aren’t sure at this time whether Rob and Michele Reiner were killed on Saturday or Sunday, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell told reporters during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

“We don’t have that kind of specificity yet. We’re waiting for the coroner to determine, as best they can at this point, the time of death,” McDonnell said.

The Reiners were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon.

Police decline to discuss evidence that led to murder charges against Nick Reiner

When asked by reporters what evidence led them to suspect Nick Reiner of murdering his parents, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell was only willing to say that Reiner’s arrest was the result of “good, solid police work” by his team.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman was also unwilling to provide details about the case, including what responding officers found at the scene after being called to the home of Rob and Michele Reiner on Sunday. All of the relevant evidence will ultimately be disclosed through court filings at the appropriate time, Hochman said.

Just hours before Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead, they attended a holiday party on Saturday with their son Nick Reiner at Conan O’Brien’s Pacific Palisades home, where Nick made other guests “uncomfortable with his behavior,” NBC News reports.

According to the report, which cites two unnamed sources who attended the party, Nick Reiner had “at least one interaction that left partygoers concerned”:

He is alleged to have interrupted a conversation involving comedian Bill Hader. When Hader told him the conversation was private, the source said, Nick Reiner appeared to stand still and stare before “storming off.”

Nick Reiner was arrested and taken into custody late Sunday and is being held without bail on suspicion of murder.

The lawyer representing Nick Reiner, the suspect in the stabbing deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Singer Reiner, is a well-known defense attorney who has had several high-profile clients in recent years.

Alan Jackson, a former L.A. prosecutor, defended Harvey Weinstein in his 2022 rape trial. Weinstein was convicted and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

He served as the defense attorney for Kevin Spacey, who was charged with sexually assaulting a man in Nantucket, Mass. The charges were dropped before the trial began.

More recently, Jackson represented Karen Read, who was charged with killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, in 2022. Read was acquitted of second-degree murder earlier this year.

Nick Reiner has not been medically cleared to appear in court, his lawyer says

Nick Reiner was scheduled to appear in Los Angeles Superior Court this morning. But his attorney, Alan Jackson, told reporters gathered there that his client has not been medically cleared to be transported to the courthouse.

The 32-year-old is being held without bail on suspicion of murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

Formal charges have still not been announced. The Los Angeles Police Department said the case would be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review on Tuesday.

Greg Risling, a spokesman for the district attorney’s office, said in an email to Yahoo News that a case has not yet been filed against the suspect.

The hosts of all four major late-night television shows took time to remember Rob Reiner on Monday.

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon

Fallon recalled Reiner as a frequent Tonight Show guest.

“Everyone here would line up around his dressing room to say hi or tell him something that they loved,” Fallon recalled. “I personally remember the last time he was on our show, he came out from the curtain, and I was so happy to see him that I hugged him, and then we didn’t let go of hugging all the way to the guest’s chair. We didn’t plan it. We were just doing a bit, and he knew I was doing a bit and just went along with it.”

“He’s one of the smartest and funniest people I’ve ever met. What a tremendous loss, and he leaves behind such a legacy,” Fallon added. “Thank you for all the great work on and offscreen, and continuing to be an inspiration to me and millions of people around the world. In the end, I’m going to remember all the laughs that you’ve given us.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Kimmel praised Reiner as “one of our greatest directors and patriots” while denouncing President Trump’s post blaming Reiner’s death on his political opposition.

“It’s so hateful and vile, when I first saw it, I thought it was fake,” Kimmel said. “My wife showed it to me this morning, and I was like, even for him, that seemed like too much.”

Late Night With Seth Meyers

Meyers said that while he did not know Rob and Michele Reiner “very well,” they were “delightful people to be in the room with.”

Like Kimmel, Meyers condemned Trump’s post about Reiner, which he called “beyond the pale.”

Meyers then recalled the first time he saw This Is Spinal Tap, Reiner’s 1984 mockumentary.

“I remember my ears perking up at the idea of like, what comedy could be,” Meyers said.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

Colbert opened The Late Show by addressing three major tragedies that happened over the weekend, including the deadly shooting at Brown University, the massacre at Australia’s Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration and the stabbing deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife.

“We are going to do a comedy show tonight, in light of — and in spite of — the darkness,” Colbert said.

James Woods chokes up on Fox News while remembering his friend and ‘great patriot’ Rob Reiner

In an interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters on Monday night, actor James Woods choked up while remembering Rob Reiner, who he called a “great patriot” despite their political differences.

Reiner, a progressive Democrat, was one of President Trump’s most outspoken critics in Hollywood. Woods, a staunch Republican, is one of Trump’s most vocal supporters in Hollywood.

“People who didn’t know that Rob and I knew each other, they would see us laughing and kidding each other and they would go, ‘How is it that you and Rob Reiner are friends?’” Woods recalled. “I would say, ‘I think Rob Reiner is a great patriot.’ Do I agree on many of his ideas on how that patriotism should be enacted, to celebrate the America that we both love? No. He doesn’t agree with me either, but he also respects my patriotism. We had a different path to the same destination, which was a country we both love. Did I agree with his politics? I did not. Did I love him as a friend, as an artist, as an icon of Hollywood and as a patriot? I most certainly did. And I am just absolutely devastated by this terrible event.”

Woods, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in Reiner’s 1996 film Ghosts ofMississippi, credited the director with “saving” his career.

“Rob literally saved my career and really put me back on track in a way that was so important and rewarding in my life. He really fought for me when a studio didn’t want me in a movie,” Woods said. “I went from really being basically out of a job to getting an Academy Award nomination, and I give all the credit to Rob.”

Jerry Seinfeld says Rob Reiner saved his show from cancellation

In an Instagram post, Jerry Seinfeld paid tribute to Rob Reiner, who he credited with saving his eponymous NBC show from being canceled.

“Next to [Seinfeld cocreator] Larry David and George Shapiro, Rob Reiner had the biggest influence on my career,” Seinfeld wrote. “Our show would have never happened without him. He saw something no one else could. When nobody at the network liked the early episodes, he saved us from cancellation.

“That I was working with Carl Reiner’s son, who happened to be one of the kindest people in show business, seemed unreal,” Seinfeld continued. “I was naive at the time to how much his passion for us meant.

“Rob and Michele married right as our show was starting and they became an imprint for me of how it’s supposed to work, each one broadening the other,” he added. “Their death, together, is impossibly sad.”

The Los Angeles Police Department said in a press release that Nick Reiner was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Sunday night, less than six hours after the bodies of Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered.

The release stated that the 32-year-old “was responsible for their deaths.”

Viola Davis: ‘Some losses are beyond words’

Actress Viola Davis joined the scores of Hollywood stars paying tribute to the Reiners following their stabbing deaths.

“Some losses are beyond words. For one’s life to end this way is a loss of biblical proportions,” Davis wrote in an Instagram post. “To the family and loved ones of the Reiners… every fiber of my heart and prayers are with you. To Rob and Michele… your story does not begin with this ending. I feel… I KNOW… you were loved and gave love… in abundance. Actor Mandy Patinkin, who played Inigo Montoya in Rob Reiner’s beloved 1987 film The Princess Bride, released a lengthy statement to news outlets in response to Reiner’s death, sharing memories from the set.

“How do we process this unthinkable tragedy? Loss after loss after loss! What is happening to our world? What is happening to our human race?” Patinkin said. “I can’t breathe, but I’m breathing. I’m howling at the gods every moment. Then I talk to a friend or myself and quiet down and I realize the gods are not to blame, the tsunami of tragedy is the responsibility of human beings.

“When we were filming the scene in The Princess Bride, where Inigo kills the six fingered man and says: ‘I want my father back your son of a bitch,’ take after take after take Rob kept asking me to do less do less do less,” Patinkin recalled. “In my sleepless night, I realized he wanted less anger from me to allow my broken heart to be felt.

“Now I’m hearing his voice tell us all to do more do more do more to repair the human soul to repair our hearts to repair our country to repair our world,” he added. “To never give up, to keep fighting, to keep living for every soul taken from this earth, that no longer has the life and breath to raise their voices for a better world, we must raise our voices for them.”

Zooey Deschanel: ‘My heart is broken’

Actress Zooey Deschanel — who worked alongside Rob Reiner on New Girl (Reiner played her father on the sitcom) — reacted to the deaths of the Reiners in an Instagram post.

“My heart is broken. Rob Reiner was the absolute warmest, funniest, most generous of spirits. A truly good human being,” Deschanel wrote. “An incredible artist and such a playful and fun collaborator. I cherish the time we spent working together and the many films he made that have shaped who I am.”

“Rob and his lovely wife Michele were always so kind and it brought me so much joy any time I was lucky enough to see them,” she added. “I’m absolutely devastated. Sending so much love to their family and friends. 💔”

The Obamas were supposed to see the Reiners on the day they died, Michelle Obama says

In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, Michelle Obama said that she and former President Barack Obama were supposed to see Rob and Michele Singer Reiner on Sunday night.

“We’ve known them for many, many years and were supposed to be seeing them that night — last night. And we got the news,” Michelle Obama told Kimmel.

The former first lady alluded to President Trump’s derogatory post in which he blamed Reiner’s death on “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

“Let me just say this: Unlike some people, Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever wanna know,” the former first lady continued. “They are not deranged or crazed, what they have always been are passionate people. In a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on, they were the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about. And they cared about their family and they cared about this country and they cared about fairness and equity. And that is the truth; I do know them.”

Nick Reiner was last in the national spotlight in 2015 and 2016, while promoting the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie” that he made with his father, Rob Reiner.

“Being Charlie” is about the younger Reiner’s struggle with addiction and the strain it put on his family. Nick cowrote the screenplay and Rob directed.

At the time, Nick said he was sober.

But a few years later, in 2018, Nick appeared on an addiction-focused podcast and admitted that he was using drugs again, according to the Hollywood Reporter. He recalled smashing up his parents’ guesthouse while “spun out on uppers”; suffering “a cocaine heart attack” on a cross-country flight; and leaving a sober living facility in Maine because he “just wanted to get back to my old life of like smoking weed, kind of taking some pills, like doing whatever I wanted.”

Asked if he had any parting words for listeners, Nick said, “I have no parting words. Just everybody use or don’t use … whatever.”

Starting in the 1990s, Rob and Michele Reiner became well-known in Hollywood — and beyond — as passionate crusaders for progressive causes, from early childhood care to same-sex marriage.

They were also prominent critics of President Trump.

But years before she or Trump became politically active, Michele Singer Reiner — then working as a photographer under her maiden name, Michele Singer — took the original cover image of “The Art of the Deal,” Trump’s 1987 bestseller.

“She has a lot to atone for,” Rob Reiner later joked to the Guardian.

In a conversation with Stephen Colbert in 2016, Reiner credited his wife for his activism.

“I can honestly say the reason I’ve done as many things in the political sphere is largely because of her,” Reiner said.
